Pre-Application

Our Pugs are not placed on a "first come, first served" basis. We try to match up the needs of the pug with the desires and lifestyle of the adopting family. Pugs who are adopted by us have received their shots, a heartworm test, are on heartworm preventative, and have been examined by a veterinarian. In many cases, the dog may have had other medical procedures or surgery while in our care. We will disclose any medical conditions which we are aware of prior to the adoption. These are rescue pugs however, and very little if anything is known about their prior care or treatment. We cannot in any way guarantee the health of these pugs.

It is Homeward Bound’s policy to not adopt our rescues into homes with unaltered pets. While spaying and neutering is a personal choice, it is in the best health interest of a pet to be spayed or neutered. It cuts down on chances of testicular cancer in males - not to mention the marking and mounting issues when a new pet is brought in - as well as mammary tumors and cancer in females. If your pet is not spayed or neutered and you are unwilling to have it done, please do not continue the application process unless that pet is elderly, an active show dog, or have verifiable medical issues preventing it from being altered. The spay/neuter status of all current pets in any adoptive home is verified through the vet reference and no adoption is approved until this is done.

Over the years we have learned about mixing pugs with large dogs. Pugs are very vulnerable dogs in that the way their jaw and teeth are positioned, also in the placement of their eyes. They are no match in for a larger dog in a dog fight. Even a misplaced paw during play can cause the loss of an eye. We cannot take the chance with the pugs that are entrusted to our care. Many of the pugs we get have already been attacked by larger dogs, as you can see by the number of one eyed pugs on our site.

We will not adopt to family’s with dogs over 30 pounds. The only possible exception being elderly dogs or extremely gentle dogs. Verification of temperament will be made during home visit.
